The Academic Charter proclaims that Nagoya University, “through an education that values initiative, shall cultivate courageous intellectuals endowed with powers of rational thought and creativity.” It is essential for students to maintain their physical and mental health as the foundation for such an effort. For this reason, Nagoya University has established Health and Sports Science as one of the Basic Courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum “to cultivate physically and mentally healthy individuals who are willing to take on challenges.” More specifically, this course aims to help students become “healthy” individuals, who develop an enthusiasm, interest and involvement in lifelong health and sports, as well as the following skills and attributes:

  1. Knowledge: to acquire accurate, evidence-based knowledge about health, fitness, exercise and sports sciences necessary for a lifetime;
  2. Action: to achieve and put into practice the ability necessary to maintain and increase health and physical strength and to participate in sports;
  3. Humanity: to develop the social skills and well-rounded personality necessary to serve as future leaders in society, by participating in sports.
